Zenit–Mexican Bishops Protest Same-Sex "Marriage"

After two Mexican cardinals were criticized for speaking out against the legalization of same-sex “marriage,” the rest of the bishops in that country rose to the defense of free speech.

Cardinal Norberto Rivera Carrera, archbishop of Mexico City, and Cardinal Juan Sandoval Íñiguez, archbishop of Guadalajara, were accused of “intolerance” for having spoken out against same-sex “marriage” and adoptions by homosexual couples.

In response, the Conference of the Mexican Episcopate published a communiqué Tuesday, stating, “We lament that on expressing these concepts in public opinion, there are those who recriminate and threaten, warning of intolerance, when tolerance is the possibility that we all express our opinion and positions.”

Nice use of quotes in the title.
Would it be ok if I were to rewrite it as:
    Mexican “bishops” protest same-sex marriage

I read this to mean that the Mexican Bishops have spoken out in defense of their archbishops, not against them. It sounds as if the Bishops are speaking in defense of free speech to condemn the government actions in legalizing same-sex “marriage”, not condemning the two Cardinals.

I was referring to the use of quotes to delegitimize the actions of others. Those who are getting married see their marriages as real and valid expressions of their commitment. The religious leaders are likely seen as valid religious leaders. By moving the quotes over one can see how it works both ways.

  4. Joshua 24:15 says:

Um, dennis, just because some people call it “marriage” doesn’t make it marriage in the eyes of the Church, or God. Lots of things we sinful humans do and call “good” are not so in God’s eyes.

    Just sayin’.
